The title of this post is a common refrain among authors. See, writers are depressed for a reason. They have to know their characters inside-and-out. They have to love those characters, even love the weird grating thing they do with their teeth. Then they have to ruin their characters’ lives with plot.

It reminds me of Abraham’s story. All Abraham and Sarah wanted was a child. They didn’t want more money or good looks or to hurt someone else. They wanted to love a child. The patter of his feet gave his father honor and meaning.

You know how the story goes. God commanded Abraham to slaughter his son – not even to have someone else do it. How merciless God must have seemed. Isaac was all that Abraham wanted out of life. Why did God want to take it away? Stop throwing rocks, Lord, please! God did spare Isaac, but Abraham didn’t know that going in. He gave up what he loved most.

Are we called to do that? Do we have to sacrifice what we hold dearest for God? How do you know when to let go?
