It is beautifully and crudely ironic that today I wrote about reveling in God. Because just before I wrote those words, unbeknown to me, a miracle happened in my own family. My older brother is fine. Doesn’t seem like a miracle, does it?
Well, according to the witnesses of the crash, he shouldn’t be here at all.
My family gave me permission to put this up, but for privacy reasons I still need to be vague. In short, my brother’s wheel clipped the wheel of a semi. No one broke any rules, no one was speeding. But my brother’s car was sent into a spin and – thanks be to God – landed in the median. My third-hand report is that a driver not far behind the crash didn’t expect my brother to walk away. In fact, this driver said he thought my brother died on impact.
The driver stayed and made sure my brother was safe. The nurses and doctors took excellent care of him – even found where his glasses had flown off. The trusty little Honda my family has been driving for years collapsed just like it should and its seatbelt saved my brother’s life. Yes, he’s banged up and bruised. But he’s already been released from the hospital. He walked out of the hospital.
My brother was surrounded by so many angels today. By all logic, he shouldn’t have lived. God saved him today. I don’t mean to suggest that when a young person dies in a car wreck that God isn’t there or that God liked my brother more than plenty of other brothers. That’s the opposite of what I mean.
Rather, miracles happen, folks. Grace surrounds us everyday. Thanks be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Though I doubt this was the intent of the verse, there is only one thing that describe how I feel right now:
“We had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” (Luke 15:32)
I share in your rejoicing in God’s protection over your brother. May he heal quickly and without complication!
Thank you very much, Chad. I’m so grateful for your prayers.
